William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet (often shortened to Romeo + Juliet ) is a 1996 romantic crime catastrophe motion-picture show directed, co-produced, and co-written by Baz Luhrmann. It is a modernized adaptation of William Shakespeare's tragedy Romeo and Juliet. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes in the title roles of two teenagers who fall dotty, despite their being members of feuding families. Brian Dennehy, Bathroom Leguizamo, Harold Perrineau, Pete Postlethwaite, Paul Sorvino and Diane Venora also star in supporting roles. It is the third major film version of the play, following a 1936 movie and a 1968 film.

The film was released on November 1, 1996, by 20th C Fox to commercial succeeder, and was met with generally advantageous reviews. The photographic film grossed over $51.8 million over a $14.5 1000000 budget. At the 47th Berlin International Film Festival in 1997, DiCaprio North Korean won the Silver Bear for Best Actor and Luhrmann won the Alfred the Great Bauer Treasure.[5] Luhrmann was as wel nominated for the Golden Deport Award for Best Picture.[6] At the 69th Academy Awards, Catherine Martin and Brigitte Broch were nominated for Charles Herbert Best Artistry Direction/Set Decoration.[6] In 2005, the picture show was included on the BFI list of the "50 films you should look on by the age of 14".[7]

The flic was also re-released in Luhrmann's Red Curtain Trilogy Videodisk box placed in 2002 together with Rigorously Dance hall (1992) and Moulin Rouge! (2001).

Plot [edit]

In Verona Beach, the Capulets and Montagues are two rival business enterprise empires. The bad blood of the older generation—Fulgencio and Gloria Capulet and Ted and Caroline Montague—is felt by their younger relatives. A gunfight 'tween Montagues led by Benvolio, Romeo's cousin-german, and Capulets LED by Tybalt, Juliet's cousin, creates chaos in the city. Being the third civil brawl, the Chief of Police, Captain Prince, reprimands the families, warning them that if such an event occurs again, their lives "shall pay the forfeit of the peace".

Benvolio and Romeo memorize of a Capulet party that eventide which they decide to gate-crash. Romeo agrees on hearing that Rosaline, with whom he is smitten, is attending. They meet their Friend, Mercutio, World Health Organization has tickets to the party, and Romeo takes ecstasy equally they continue to the Capulet mansion. The effects of the drug and the party overwhelm Romeo, who goes to the restroom. There he sees Juliet, and the two instantly fall taken with, some unaware of who the otherwise is. Tybalt floater Romeo and vows to kill him for incursive his kinfolk's home.

Afterward Romeo leaves the political party, he and Juliet each learn that they lie to feuding families, only Romeo returns to see her. Juliet tells him that if he sends Son away the chase day, they will be committed. The next daytime, Romeo asks Father Laurence to hook up with them, and he agrees. Romeo passes the word on via Juliet's harbor and they before long get marital status.

Tybalt encounters Mercutio and Romeo at the beach. Romeo attempts to make peace, but Tybalt assaults him. Mercutio intervenes and batters Tybalt, and is about to kill him when Romeo stops him. Tybalt takes the chance to fatally wound Mercutio, who curses both houses before dying. Infuriated, Romeo chases after the fleeing Tybalt and shoots him dead, avenging Mercutio's death.

Captain Prince banishes Romeo from the city, and He goes into hiding with Forefather Laurence. The harbor arrives and tells him that Juliet is waiting for him. Romeo climbs Juliet's balcony and they consummate their marriage, with Romeo departing soon after. Meanwhile, Fulgencio decides Juliet volition marry Dave Paris, the governor's son.

The next morning, Gloria informs Juliet that she is to marry Paris, and when Juliet refuses Fulgencio threatens to disinherit her. Juliet runs away and seeks out Father Laurence, imploring him to aid her whilst threatening to commit self-destruction. Father Laurence gives her a potion that leave let her fake her own death, after which she will be placed within the Capulet vault to come alive 24 hours ulterior. Father Laurence vows to inform Romeo of the plot via missive, whereupon the latter bequeath sneak into the hurdle and, in one case reunited with Juliet, the two will escape to Mantua. Romeo does not insure the delivered letter however and, believing Juliet to be dead, buys a vial of poison from an druggist.

Romeo enters the church service where Juliet lies and consumes the poisonous substance even as Juliet wakes upbound. Distraught concluded Romeo's death, Juliet picks up his gun and shoots herself in the head, falling down beside his lifeless consistency. Romeo's body is existence embezzled inside an ambulance with a crowd of spectators and reporters observing the incident from behind the police line, when the parents of both Romeo and Juliet arrive in the scene. Natalie Portman had been cast A Juliet but, during rehearsals, it was thought that she looked as well young for the part, and the footage looked As though DiCaprio was "molesting" her.[9] Baz Luhrmann has also stated that Portman was too teenaged at the time, and successful DiCaprio look senior than intended. He was 21 at the time of filming and Portman was solitary 14.[10]

Differences with the shoot and the original play [edit]

While it retains the original Shakespearean dialogue, the film represents the Montagues and the Capulets as warring maffia empires (with legitimate business fronts) in contemporary Joint States, where swords are replaced by guns[12] (with brand names such as "Obelisk" and "Sword") and a FedEx style delivery service is called "Post Precipitation".[13] Some characters' name calling are also changed: Paris, Maker &ere; Lady Montague and Lord &adenylic acid; Madam Capulet are given world-class names (in the master copy, their first name calling are never mentioned); Mendicant Laurence becomes Father Laurence, and Prince Escalus is rewritten atomic number 3 the police captain of Verona Beach, being renamed Captain Prince.[14] The adaptation eliminates the character of Friar John, and some characters change families: in the original, Gregory and Sampson are Capulets, merely in the film, they are Montagues; conversely, Abram, arsenic Abra, is shifted from the Montague to the Capulet kinfolk.[14]

Luhrmann obtained some funds from Fox to do a shop and shoot some tormenter footage in Sydney. Leonardo DiCaprio agreed to pay up his possess expenses to fly to Sydney and equal part of it. Erst Bedevil saw footage of the fight vista, they agreed to support it.[15]

All of the development was done in Australia, with pre-product in Australia and Canada and post-yield in Australia. The film premiered on November 1, 1996, in the USA and Canada, in 1,276 theaters, and grossed $11.1 million its opening weekend. It went on to gross $46.3 million in the United States and Canada,[17] with a worldwide total of USD$151,841,661.

Critical response [edit]

Review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes rated the film "Fresh", with 73% of 67 critics giving positive reviews with an average military rating of 6.8/10 with the consensus that says, "Baz Luhrmann's visual philosophy is as dissentious as it is fresh and originative".[18] Metacritic gives the film a score of 60 unconscious of 100 based on 20 reviews, indicating "heterogenous or average reviews".[19] Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "A-" connected an A+ to F scale.[20]

James Berardinelli gave the film 3 out of 4 stars and wrote, "In the end, no more matter how many a innovative and unconventional flourishes it applies, the success of any adaptation of a Shakespeare play is determined past two factors: the competence of the theatre director and the ability of the main redact members. Luhrmann, Danes, and DiCaprio place this Romeo and Juliet in capable hands."[21]

Conversely, Roger Ebert gave the film a mixed review of only 2 stars out of 4, saying, "I've seen King Lear atomic number 3 a samurai drama and Macbeth as a Mafia story, and two opposite Romeo and Juliets about ethnic difficulties in Manhattan (West Lateral Story and China Girl), only I have never seen anything remotely approaching the mess that the new punk rendering of Romeo &adenylic acid; Juliet makes of Shakespeare's tragedy."[22]

The film won several awards.[6] Leonardo DiCaprio won Favorite Actor and Claire Danes North Korean won Favorite Actress in a Romance at the 1997 Smash hit Entertainment Awards.[6] At the 1997 MTV Movie Awards, Danes won Best Female Carrying out. DiCaprio was nominated for Best Male Performance, and DiCaprio and Danes were some nominated for Best Kiss and Unsurpassable On-Silver screen Duo.[6] At the 51st BAFTA Pic Awards, director Baz Luhrmann won Best Direction, Luhrmann and Mary Haile won the Top-grade Adapted Screenplay, Nellee Hooper, Craig Armstrong and Marius Hugo deVries won the Best Picture show Music, and Catherine Martin won the Best Product Design. The film was also nominated for Best Cinematography, Best Editing, and C. H. Best Sound.[6]

At the 47th Berlin International Film Fete in 1997, DiCaprio won the Silver grey Bear for Best Actor and Luhrmann won the Alfred Bauer Prize.[5] Luhrmann was also nominated for the Golden Bear Award for Best Picture.[6] At the 69th Honorary society Awards, Catherine of Aragon Mary Martin and Brigitte Broch were nominated for Best Artistic production Focus/Set Decoration.[6]

The picture show was nominative to appear on the American Film Institute's 100 Years ... 100 Passions leaning in 2002.[23]

The film was originally free on Videodisc on March 19, 2002, past 20th Hundred Fox Home Amusement.[24] A 10th anniversary uncommon variant DVD containing extra features and commentary was released on February 6, 2007, and a Blu-ray edition was released on October 19, 2010.[ citation needed ]

Retrospective reviews [edit]

The shoot maintains a popular reputation among English teachers, as a way through which to introduce auxiliary school students to the gambol. Although not to every critic's taste, the movie is now recognised as one of the all but influential Shakespeare film adaptations ever made.[25]

For the promotion of her memoir titled This Much Is True published by John Murray in 2021, British actress Miriam Margolyes released freed-to-quotation commercial excerpts including unity on her experience shot Romeo + Juliet. Along her co-whiz Leonardo Dicaprio she wrote[26]:

"I liked [Dicaprio] tremendously and loved his work, just luckily I was immune from his groin charms, unlike poor Claire Danes, then only 17. It was obvious to all of us that she really was loving with her Romeo, but Leonardo wasn't crazy with her. She wasn't his type at all. He didn't know how to grapple with her evident infatuation. He wasn't sensitive to her feelings, was dismissive of her and could make up quite a soiled in his keenness to get away, while Claire was utterly sincere and so open. Information technology was painful to watch. Many years subsequent, I was in a eating house and she came equal to me and said: 'We worked together on a flic once, I put on't know if you call back me? My name is Claire Danes.' It was the opposite of the arrogant behaviour of several stars and so typical of her."[29] [30]
